Universal Studios vs Islands of Adventure: which park first?
For thrill-seekers, Islands of Adventure wins (Hagrid's, VelociCoaster, the Hulk, and Hogsmeade). For immersion and indoor rides, Universal Studios wins (Diagon Alley, movie-set lands, more rainy-day options). Most first-timers with a Park-to-Park ticket should start where their must-ride is.
Islands of Adventure — the thrill park
IOA has the best coaster lineup in Orlando: Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, VelociCoaster, and The Incredible Hulk, plus Hogsmeade (the other half of the Wizarding World) and Marvel Super Hero Island. If your family lives for coasters, start here.
Universal Studios — the immersion park
Universal Studios leans into movie-set theming: Diagon Alley (with Escape from Gringotts), Revenge of the Mummy, Transformers, and The Simpsons. It has more indoor rides — better on a rainy or brutally hot day — and hosts Halloween Horror Nights in fall.
Which should you do first?
The two parks are connected by the Hogwarts Express, which needs a Park-to-Park ticket — and riding it in both directions is a highlight, so most visitors buy Park-to-Park and split their day. If you only have one day and one park: pick Islands of Adventure for coasters and Harry Potter, or Universal Studios if Diagon Alley or the movie IP matters most. Start at whichever park holds your #1 must-ride, at rope drop, before lines build.
